ABSTRACT

It has been proposed that the oxidative stress (OxS) it is a fundamental element in the physiopathogenesis of the chronic inflammatory process that characterizes human periodontal disease (HPD) and the diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM). Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the OxS and the HPD, in elderly adults with and without DM type 2. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a no probabilistic sample of 52 older subjects (29 with and 23 without DM). To all the participants that were determined biological markers of OxS and the indexes: ESI, DMF and OHI-S. The results showed that it conforms age increases the degree (extension and severity) of the HPD it is significantly bigger (p ‹ 0.05), likewise it was observed that the average of the OHI-S was significantly higher in elderly with severe HPD (p ‹ 0.05), however, we did not observe differences statistically significant in the biological markers of OxS of those subject with slight HPD vs severe. Also, it was demonstrated that the biological markers of the OxS measured in blood serum have not usefulness physiopathologic and clinic for the dentistry.
