Appendicitis in pregnancy

ABSTRACT

Acute appendicitis stands out as the most frequent non-obstetric surgical emergency during pregnancy. Its diagnostic approach represents a challenge, since due to the physiological and anatomical changes typical of pregnancy, the symptoms are usually not as clear. Despite the fact that the diagnosis is based on clinical and laboratory values, pregnant patients may not present the classic findings of acute appendicitis, so imaging studies are essential in case of diagnostic doubt. The definitive treatment for acute appendicitis is appendectomy, either open or laparoscopic, associated with the administration of broad-spectrum prophylactic antibiotics. This pathology must be addressed in a timely manner, since the delay in its management is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes.
