ABSTRACT

Firearm projectile injuries currently represent one of the main causes of hospital admission in Mexico, with maxillofacial injuries being the most serious variants because they put the patient's life at risk by compromising airways, vascular system ( hemorrhages, thrombosis), tegumementary and neurological sensory and motor, the latter of aesthetic and functional importance, leaving irreparable sequelae of various kinds such as xerostomia, or death due to cerebral edema secondary to the cavitation phenomenon produced by the projectile in its path; For this reason, it is crucial that health personnel act with great efficiency and professionalism in these emergencies and manage them from an interdisciplinary perspective. The patient under study described in the present case goes to a primary care unit due to sudden loss of alertness and facial injury in parotidomaseterine region of unknown origin and compartment syndrome. The reference and counter-referral system in Mexico is the instrument through which physicians can solve the patient's problem, in the issue that concerns us was in the second level of care where the type of injury was determined, in this case caused by firearm shooting, presented with an entry hole in the submaxillary region and an exit hole in the masseteric region, constituting the so-called linear wound, showing that the best diagnostic and treatment approach is through a clinical analysis, image studies and application of knowledge in ballistics of effects.
