ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the results obtained with laparoscopic splenectomy in general hospitals of the state of Coahuila, Mexico.
Design: Observational, longitudinal study without control group.
Setting: General hospitals from the state of Coahuila, Mexico.
Patients and methods: Seven patients requiring splenectomy due to diverse causes and subjected to laparoscopic surgery.
Results: Average surgical time of 2:45 hours, average transoperative haemorrhage of 350 ml. Two patients required blood transfusion due to transoperative haemorrhage, one of them ha to be converted to conventional surgery. In one patient subjected to surgery due to spleen trauma, the spleen was fractured at the time of removal from the abdominal cavity, and a fragment was accidentally left inside, which was removed 48 hours later through laparoscopy. Average hospital stay was of 2 days. The objective for the splenectomies was achieved in all patients.
Conclusion: Splenectomy can be performed through a laparoscopic approach for haematology diseases.
