ABSTRACT

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by coronavirus type 2 of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2), which was discovered in Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province, China, in December 2019. Objective: To characterize the management of corpses with the COVID-19 and the possible risk of transmission that they represent. Material and methods: A bibliographic review was made from 22 bibliographies. Articles from international journals were consulted: Research Gate, JAMA, Journal Clinical Pathology and Journal Forensic Legal Medicine and databases such as Pubmed and SciencieDirect, using the terms “corpses”, “COVID-19”, “management” and “transmission”; for Spanish and English. In addition, the most recently published literature was considered as selection criteria in accordance with the novelty of this disease and the quality, reliability and validity of the articles have been verified to carry out an adequate review. Development: On the transmission and management of corpses with the COVID-19, there are few investigations, which address the different guidelines that are followed in the world on how to deal with the corpse, related to: the cleaning of the morgue, autopsy, funeral services and biosecurity. Conclusions: The modes of transmission of COVID-19 by corpses do not have a scientific basis, but due to biological risk, different countries took appropriate strategies: the use of protective equipment and other safety measures, especially during the autopsy, the use of disinfectant and recommended funeral services.
