ABSTRACT

Introduction: SARS-COV-2 virus causes the COVID-19 disease that can damage different organs including the heart, liver and kidneys. It requires critical care, in which airway management is a clinical practice challenge to keep hypoxic or hypoventilated patients oxygenated to save or sustain their lives. A situation like this has, as never before, exposed health workers to the risk of contagion, so strict adherence to infection control measures is vital. Methodology: A documentary research was carried out through the search of key words: SARS-COV-2, aerosol transmission, respiratory protection and protective equipment. This research was done in PubMed, Scielo, Science Direct, a listing of websites of Clinical Practice Guidelines and recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), original articles from international and national scientific journals in Spanish and English language were considered too. After the analysis, the articles were grouped into four categories. Conclusion: Advanced airway management in patients with COVID-19 and their care, involves aerosolgenerating procedures, this fine solid particles suspension or liquid droplets in the air may contain viable viral remains whose infectious potential is uncertain. The review identified that there are defined care protocols among frontline staff as well as care managers, being health personnel highly vulnerable to SARS-COV-2.
