ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the fundoplication technique by a laparoscopic approach, using only 5 mm trocars and to demonstrate its efficaciousness to avoid post-incisional hernias.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Material and methods: Only 5-mm trocars and same diameter instrumentation were used to perform the fundoplication in 55 consecutive patients from September 1997 to January 2000.
Results: Follow-up of patients ranged from one to 28 months. No post-incisional hernias have occurred in the wounds with 5-mm trocars.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic fundoplication with 5-mm trocars is a safe and efficient method to avoid post-incisional hernias caused by puncture with the trocar.
