ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis, a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease of the skin, presents a multifactorial and not well known complex physiopathology where genetic and environmental factors interrelate to favor the development of the disease. In this bibliographic review carried out in important databases such as the U.S. National Library of Medicine, SciELO, ClinicalKey and Cuban medical journals, the descriptor atopic dermatitis was used in English and Spanish. The main factors involved in the physiopathology of atopic dermatitis such as genetic factors, disorders of the immune system, epidermal dysfunction, the role of lipids, microbiota and environmental factors are described, aside from the practical application of this knowledge in the design of drugs to fight the disease.
