ABSTRACT

Introduction: several studies on weight variation in university students have shown a remarkable weight increase over the course of their career.
Objective: to determine the variation of body mass index in students from a humane medical school during the last three years of their career at a university in northern Perú.
Methods: retrospective study of medical records from years 2011, 2012 and 2013, that belonged to students from the Escuela de Medicina Humana, at the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo.
Results: the average body mass index variation per year was 0.43 kg/m². The variation of the global average weight in the three years was 2.15 kg, being 2.16 kg and 3.34 kg, in women and men, respectively.
Conclusions: there was an increase in the body mass index, most often in men.
