ABSTRACT
Objective. To study the frequency of the rotavirus associated to acute gastroenteritis in children assisted in a private hospital.
Material and methods. It was investigated in the first semester of 1999 the presence of the rotavirus in the feces of 446 children smaller than 5 years with acute gastroenteritis; 279 were assisted in an ambulatory way and 167 were hospitalized. The identification of the rotavirus was made by means of the “kit” Rotatest
®.
Results. Among the children assisted in ambulatory form 101 (36.2%) had the rotavirus as long as this was in 92 (55.1%) of those hospitalized; the frequency in the 446 children was of 44.2%.
Conclusions. In comparison with studies published in Mexico the last three decades the rotavirus frequency in the children assisted in this hospital is bigger than that informed in other institutions.
