ABSTRACT
Demographic changes found in Mexico indicate an increment in the proportion of the elderly population. There is limited information regarding the oral health status of this group in Mexico. The aim of the present study was to estimate the caries prevalence and severity, also to assess the condition of the periodontal in people 60 years-old or older living in Mexico City. World Health Organization criteria was used to evaluate dental caries (DMFT) and periodontal conditions. (CPITN). A total of 161 persons participated in the study. Mean age of the population was 69.6 (sd 6.9) years-old. Twenty-three percent of the study group was edentulous. The dental caries index CPOD was 16.3 (sd 6.7). The CPITN index showed that approximately 50% of the population had periodontal pockets. The results of the present study showed poor oral health in the elderly population examined.
