ABSTRACT

Objective: to define the disease, its history, causes, diagnosis, treatment and mention some famous personalities that presented or present autism spectrum disorders.
Development: a search was made of material related to the topic, using Pubmed. 3726 bibliographic references were found, between the years 2013 to 2017, 58 textbooks and other articles were reviewed. Autism (from the Greek auto-αúτός that acts on itself or by itself and ismos ‘pathological process’): neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by alteration of social interaction, communication (both verbal and non-verbal) and restricted behavior and repetitive. It is highly heritable, but the cause includes both, environmental factors and genetic susceptibility. Diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become evident in early childhood. Autism affects the processing of information in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize. It is one of the three autism spectrum disorders. There are famous personalities who have presented autistic behavior disorders.
Conclusions: autism is one of the most controversial neurological disorders that exists. Anxiety and depression occur frequently in adolescents and autistic adults. It is known that the response to stress is more pronounced in many autists, which could be a cause. The brain differences of an autistic individual are so pronounced that they are unlikely to be eliminated through the use of drugs or intensive therapy, although, today, they are tested with behavioral therapies with encouraging results.
