ABSTRACT

Pelvic inflammatory disease corresponds to an inflammatory gynecological disorder with potential repercussions on the female reproductive system. It is defined as the inflammation of the upper genital tract, with compromise that goes from the endometrium to the uterine tubes, ovaries, annexes and even peritoneum. It is mainly due to the ascent of pathogenic microorganisms, mostly related to sexually transmitted diseases, which generate a disruption of the natural barriers with subsequent spread of microbes. Although its diagnosis continues to be a challenge, prompt establishment of therapeutic measures is considered vital in order to reduce long term complications.
