ABSTRACT
Objective. To study if the body mass index (BMI) relationship with the self-esteem in the adolescence.
Material and methods. 41 students, of newly entrance to the university, were valued in two occasions, with an interval of one year. Measurements of the IMC (IMC = kg of body weigh¸ height in m
2) and the self-esteem were obtained.
Results. At entrance, in 26 (63.4%) the self-esteem was very high and in 15 (36.6%) it was high, without significant change one year after. The same thing happened with the IMC: at entrance the average was of 24.1 ± 3.7 kg/m
2 and later it was of 24.3 ± 3.4 kg/m
2, 21% was obese. In both variables, there were not statistical differences for sex neither age (‹ 19 years
vs › 19), except in the evaluation of the self-esteem in the first evaluation. There was certain negative tendency among the two variables studied: high scores in IMC it seems to diminish the self-esteem.
Conclusions. There was not relationship between the IMC and the self-esteem, although in the last one there was certain tendency to diminish when the IMC increase.
