ABSTRACT
Background. The primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a frequent disorder of the urinary tract.
Objective. In order to know its behavior in children under medical treatment.
Material and methods. We studied 90 patients with this diagnosis in the Nephrology ward at the Pediatric Universitary Hospital of Cerro, in Havana City. The observation was carried out from February 1993 until March 1999. The variables studied were the age of child when the diagnosis was made sex, color of skin, localization and degrees of reflux, and evolution. Statistic tests were used, considering values of P ‹0.05 as positive.
Results. There was a predominance of the reflux in female and white individuals (P ‹0.05). This entity was detected in infants with a higher frequency. There was a predominance of unilateral localization and grade II reflux; in both cases we had a higher percentage of healing (P ‹ 0.05). The evaluation was favorable in almost the 70% of the children. We detected scarring and renal hypoplasias associated with high and intermediate grades of reflux.
Conclusions. We consider that an early diagnosis and a fast set up of medical treatment would contribute to a favorable evolution.
