ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the utility of sodium valproate. In the prophylactic treatment of the migraine in children.
Material and methods. Eleven childrens with migraine were included. We used the valproate at initial dose of 10 mg/kg/day as initial dose with increases according to the clinical changes and the seric levels during 6 months. The events of migraine were quantified.
Results. We recorded a reduction of 9.2 events of migraine per month before treatment to one event per month in average. Improvement appeared at two months of treatment in all patients and at the end of the treatment four patients were free of migraine events. There were not alterations in the laboratory or in electroencephalographic recordings.
Conclusions. Sodium valproate is effective to prevent attacks of migraine, improvement is initially observed since two months of treatment. We did not observed side effects.
