ABSTRACT

Objective. To analyze the experience obtained during a decade in the treatment of children with cerebral abscess.
Material and methods. Revision of the clinical files of 61 children assisted by cerebral abscess between January of 1989 and December of 1999.
Results. The most frequent localization was in the front lobe: 13 cases (21.3%). The fatality rate was of 19.7%. In 53 (86.9%) was done a surgical procedure for to drain the abscess. In 27 (44.3%) one or more agents pathogenics were identified. The main isolated bacterial identified were; Staphylococcus aureus and the Streptococcus spp, and the anaerobics: Peptostreptococcus spp, Bacteroides spp and Fusobacterium spp.
Conclusions. The dissemination of the bacteria was, principally, haematogenic. The outline antimicrobian schedule of chloramphenicol-penicillin is still useful, in the initial treatment. In the management of these children it is recommended the esterotaxic aspiration of the abscess.
