ABSTRACT
Objective. To describe the endoscopic characteristics of the tracheal-bronchial epithelium sequelaes of newborns with neonatal respiratory distress and lung infection.
Material and methods. A bronchoscopy was done to 76 infants with a gestation age of 28 to 34 weeks. All of them have had at birth the respiratory distress syndrome.
Results. In infants treated with lung surfactant inflammation of the bronchial epithelium was observed; they had also purulent secretion and severe y endobronchitis. The oldest infant studied had an accessory bronchium and atelectasis in a lung lobe. All infants had mucous membrane inflammation, but in those with smaller weight the bronchitis was severe.
Conclusions. The neonates with bronchitis, intensively handled by the respiratory distress syndrome, should be precociously studied by endoscopy. This procedure is useful and safe for to recognize the degree of inflammation of the airways an allow a better treatment.
