ABSTRACT

Background: Mucosal melanoma of the head and neck is an infrequent disease, with a high mortality rate. Its poor prognosis can be explained by the complexity of the anatomy on these areas, its silent growth and their high capability for metastasis. The lack of knowledge, treatment protocols and series of clinical cases make the approach of patients controversial and subject to diverse therapeutic approaches. Therefore, despite previous research, it has not been possible to increase the survival rate for these patients.
Clinical case: An 89-year-old male patient with a one-year evolution nasal tumor causing nasal obstruction, purulent rhinorrhea, hyposmia, epistaxis and epiphora. A histopathological report of primary melanoma of the nasal mucosa was documented. Due to its statistics and in conjunction with the department of radio-oncology and medical oncology, surgical treatment was performed.
Conclusions: Nasal mucosal melanoma usually has a worse prognosis than those emerging from the cutaneous sites and most patients develop recurrent and disseminated disease.
