ABSTRACT
The aim of this investigation was to compare several biological indicators (BI) against Bacillus subtilis 9372 y B. stearothermophilus 7953 strains from the ATCC catalog, according to tests described in the Mexican Pharmacopoea (MP).It was observed that ATCC strains and BI from foreign manufacturers have the morphological, biochemical and growth characteristics described in the MP. Indeed, foreign manufacturers claim that their products are elaborated with ATCC strains.
In contrast, some BI made in Mexico are not elaborated with ATCC strains. A Mexican B. subtilis isolate intended for use in dry heat actually behaves like ATCC-9372 strain, whereas another Mexican isolate used for verification of steam sterilization (supposedly B. stearothermophilus) behaves as a non pigmenting B. subtilis.
BI manufacturers must document their claims truthfulness and provide information that will allow the end user to select adequate products. Instructions for use must be precise.
