ABSTRACT

Objective: To perform a bibliographic review of the main epidemiological, physiopathogenic aspects, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tract tuberculosis.
Data collection: Review of the national and international literature (45 references).
Data selection: The most relevant articles related to abdominal tuberculosis were chosen (32 international and 13 national references).
Data extraction: The literature published in the period from 1977 to 1999 was reviewed searching for clinical and epidemiological aspects, as well as diagnostic procedures and therapeutics, of gastrointestinal tuberculosis. Medline and Artemisa data bases were used to localize and select the material.
Results of data synthesis: Gastrointestinal tract tuberculosis occupies the 6th place among extra-pulmonary tuberculoses. Correct diagnosis is only achieved in 50% of the cases, since clinical, laboratory, and imagining findings are unspecific. Its frequency has increased notably since the advent of AIDS. Initial treatment is medical, reserving surgery for complicated cases of the disease.
Conclusions: Tuberculosis is a public health problem worldwide. The bibliographic review revealed the need for an integrated and multidisciplinary evaluation of patients with abdominal tuberculosis, since it constitutes a great diagnostic and medical-surgical treatment challenge.
