ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare the physical properties of glass-ionomer cements; trying to confirm if its properties are really improved by the addition of silver particles and the differences between those glass-ionomer cements.
Five glass ionomer cements were tested: Two with silver particles, experimental mixture and the commercially available (Miracle Mix), a sintered silver reinforced glass-ionomer (Ketac-Silver) an two conventional type II glas-ionomer (Fuji, an Degussa). Properties evaluated were compressive and diametral tensil strengths, and abrasion resistance by loss of weight and longitude.
Five samples of each material were mae for each test according with methods proposed by ANSI/ADA specification No. 66 an 27. Testing of specimens was performed at 24 hours from start of the mixing.
Results suggest that the simple mixtures of alloy powders improve physical properties of the regular cement in the experimental mixture. ANOVA (P ‹ 0.001) and Tukey test indicated significant differences between of several of the cements teste.
