Relationship between periodontitis and erectile dysfunction: reality or myth?

ABSTRACT

Introduction: A bibliographic review was carried out in scientific articles in order to expose the possible relationship between periodontitis (PD) and erectile dysfunction (ED), as well as the overwhelming variables that are involved. Material and methods: A combination of controlled vocabulary (erectile dysfunction and periodontal disease) and free text terms based on the MEDLINE search strategy through PubMed was used as the primary search strategy. As a secondary search strategy, the bibliographic references contained in the selected articles were reviewed. Results: Ten case-control studies found significant positive associations between these two conditions. Conclusion: The evidence in the literature indicates a positive link between PD and ED.
