ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the epidemiology of nosocomial infections in a pediatric service in a third level hospital in Mexican Institute of Social Security.
Patients and methods: We revised the clinical and microbiological report of all cases of nosocomial infections between January 1993 to December 1997. The nosocomial infection was defined according CDC criterion Atlanta.
Results: The relation of nosocomial or intra-hospitalary infections was between 6.6 to 15.8 events by 100 passing out the lethality was 6.9%. The more frequent nosocomial infections were pneumonia, gastroenteritis, phlebitis, varicella and infections urinary. The microbiological agents in frequency order were: Staphylococcus coagulasa-negatives, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae and C. albicans, all microorganisms presented resistance to more frequent antibiotics of common use.
Conclusions: To know the more frequents factors to predispose to nosocomial infections and microbiological resistance behaviors, will be easy the control of nosocomial infections and prevent it, to adopt strong measures in security and will be less events in this patients.
