ABSTRACT

Over 55 months, 2,920 biological indicator tests were carried out in a sample of 91 private dental offices in Mexico. Of these, 71.4% (n = 2,084) were for autoclave cycles, 9.4% (n = 274) were Chemiclave cycles, and 19.2% (n = 562) were in dry heat. Test frequency was weekly 67.6% (n = 1974), bi-weekly 16.9% (n = 493), and 15.5% (n = 453) monthly. Of all cycles, there were 223 (7.6%) sterilization failures. Of autoclave cycles 7.5% (n = 156) failed, 8.2% (n = 46) of dry heat were unsuccessful, and 7.7% (n = 21) of chemical steam under pressure cycles failed. Chi square analysis revealed that all sterilization techniques failed with similar frequencies (χ2 = 0.307, P › 0.8).
