Clinical and prognostic factors in patients with diabetes mellitus infected by SARS-CoV-2. A review

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the coronavirus disease 2019, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2, is a major public health problem so far in the 21st century. In this disease, prevention is essential in risk groups such as patients with diabetes mellitus, a condition of interest in the medical area due to its association with an unfavorable prognosis of disease after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Objective: to describe evidence of the link between diabetes mellitus, modifiable and non-modifiable clinical factors in these patients and their relationship with the prognosis after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Material and methods: a bibliographic search was carried out in the databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus. The search was restricted to the terms “coronavirus”, “COVID-19”, “diabetes mellitus” and “prognosis” for Spanish and English. Retrospective cohort primary studies were selected. Development: diabetes mellitus is associated with an unfavorable prognosis of disease after infection with SARS-CoV-2. An inadequate glycemic control and body mass index, together with a longer time of diabetes mellitus progression and patient age, are markers of a poorer disease prognosis after COVID-19 in diabetic patients. Conclusions: it is useful to know the relationship between clinical factors in patients with diabetes mellitus and its association with the prognosis of disease after infection with SARS-CoV-2. This makes it possible to stratify, predict and optimize preventive treatment in patients with this condition.
