ABSTRACT
Purpose: To present a case of residual appendicitis post laparoscopic appendectomy.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Case description: A 55 years old female was admitted to the Hospital with right lower quadrant pain, leucocytosis and rebound tenderness 5 months after laparoscopic appendectomy. A CT scan of the abdomen showed a cecal mass with significant reduction of the lumen of the cecum. Surgical exploration revealed an indurated cecal mass which was resected. Reconstruction was by ileo-ascending colon anastomosis with stapplers. The pathologist found a 3 cm residual appendix with acute inflammation within an inflammatory mass with extensive fibrosis. Recovery was normal and she was discharged four days later.
Conclussion: The surgeons performing laparoscopic appendectomies should be more careful in finding the base of the appendix to achieve complete resection, avoiding the complication of residual appendicitis.
