ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the case of a patient with a leiomyoma of the esophagus.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Report of one case.
Description of the case: A man, 51 years old, with acid-peptic disease antecedents since the age of 20, treated empirically with antiacids, with disease symptoms for two years characterized by non-selective dysphagia, pyrosis, retrosternal pain and regurgitation, and weight loss of 2 kg. Laboratory tests, such as blood tests, hepatic functional tests, and general urine test, were within normal ranges or negative. The gastroduodenal series, endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound were compatible with the presence of a leiomyoma in the middle third of the esophagus. He was subjected to surgery through right thoracotomy, enucleating the tumor (4 x 3 cm), and evolved satisfactorily. The histopathologic study confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyoma of the esophagus. At present, 12 months after surgery, the patient is asymptomatic, and the esophagogram study revealed a small indentation at the site of tumor extirpation, endoscopy was normal.
Conclusion: Definitive treatment consists of enucleation of the tumor through thoracotomy or thoracoscopy.
