ABSTRACT

An epidemiological study to learn about the presence of periodontal disease in the patients who attend the clinics of the college of Dentistry of the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí. A group of 361 patients: 126 male between 11 and 77 years old with an average of 29.5 years and 235 female with ages of 12 to 76 years old, with an average of 33.1. The periodontal index of Ramfjord (IEP), using like complementary data bacterial plaque and calculus.
Only four patients of the total of 381 of the sample, one male and three females displayed periodontal index of 0. From 10 to 19 years, IEP to 2. From 20 to 29 years, IEP of 2 (slight to moderate gingivitis). From 30 to 39 years, IEP to 3 (with severe gingivitis). From 40 to 49 years, IEP of 4 (slight to moderate periodontitis). Between 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79 years, IEP of 4 to 6 (moderate to critical periodontitis). We believe that the importance of this study lies in the fact that it has given us awareness to the serious health problem that represents periodontal disease; perhaps greater than cavities, which has been held as the most common problem in oral pathology.
