ABSTRACT

Introduction. A recurring trait of today’s societies is the aging of their populations. It is no easy task for the elderly to get Introduction. The article starts from a concept of leadership in nursing and the competencies that this profile demands. It recalls the scope of nursing as expressed by the International Council of Nurses - ICN - which describes it as a combination of knowledge, judgements and skills that enable this professional to carry out the provision of direct health care to patients, families and communities as well as to evaluate its outcomes; to advocate for patients, health and life, to supervise and delegate tasks to auxiliary staff, to direct, manage, teach, conduct research and develop a care policy for health care systems. Body. It recognizes that the field of nursing practice is dynamic and responds to changing needs of health and its determinants; the development of medical and nursing knowledge; and technological innovations. Conclusion. To fulfill this command, leadership is needed from nurses in different areas, both training, research and service, as well as leaders in professional organizations, in the different instances of the health system and related areas where public policy is defined and the profession is regulated.
