ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to study the prevalence of periodontal disease and how certain factors can be associated with it in schoolchildren from a Mexican region. A probabilistic sample of 2,140 schoolchildren with an age rank between 6-14 years. Russell’s Periodontal Index was used for measurement of disease severity. Simplified Oral Hygiene Index was used to measure the presence of calculus and soft debris. The examiners were calibrated by means of a Kappa test.
A prevalence of 61.01% was found for the whole sample. Three mathematical models were presented: Soft debris = 2.0331- 0.981934 (height) + 0.0502228 (age) + 0.273638 (residence zone) - 0.00592202 (weight) which explains 8.55% of the behavior of the variable in the model, Calculus = 0.146486 - 0.448604 (height) + 0.0672834 (age) - 0.0532896 (residence zone) -0.00358589 (weight) which explains 6.98% of the behavior of the variable in the model, Rusell = -0.370337 + 0.0509393 (age) - 0.00726225 (weight) + 0.220032 (residence zone) which explains 13.25% of the behavior of the variable in the model.
