ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, which causes an alteration of the immune response and a production of autoantibodies directed to cellular antigens.
Anyone can be diagnosed with this disease regardless of gender or age, however, females between the ages of 15 and 44 are at greater risk. Lupus manifests in many ways that affect multiple systems of the body. The diagnosis is based on a complete medical history, physical exam and recognition of the clinical manifestations. Also, it is precise to look for signs from serological studies, including detection of autoantibodies to exclude alternative diagnoses. The criteria of the International Group of Collaborative Clinics for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology are used to classify the disease. Treatment consists of both non-pharmacological measures such as; changes to healthy lifestyles, that decrease the severity and duration of symptoms and also prevents exacerbation, and pharmacological measures such as hydroxychloroquine, the most widely used drug since it reduces the clinical manifestations of the pathology.
