Low bodyweight at birth in sick neonatal babies. Associated factors

ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the associated factors to the low birth weight of neonatal patients.
Material and methods. A sample of 252 neonates, hospitalized consecutively in a ward, were taken; 118 of them have a weight below 2.5 kg. In all of them was collected information about sociodemographic features, obstetric background and somatic characteristics of the mothers.
Results. The following variables had statistical signification with the low birth weight: the age of the mother, lack of prenatal control, weight of the mother below 50 kg, acute disease during the pregnancy, multiparity and the background of neonates with less than 2.5 kg.
Conclusions. The multivariated analysis show that low scholarity, to be male, and rupture of membranes (12 to 24 h before birth) were significatives variables.
