ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although health services are one of the main achievements of the Cuban Revolution, there are still deficiencies in the management of medicine and medical supply warehouses that hinder their performance. A proper management of these warehouses guarantees the continuity of medical services and influencies life quality of patients. However, the research works undertaken and the theoretical elements covered by the academic programs are mostly focused on inventory management, overlooking the integrality of the warehouse and its dynamic role for services in this type of organization.
Objective: To identify the main problems with management of medicines and medical supplies storage in hospital institutions of Sancti Spíritus.
Methods: Through a factorial analysis, the results of the application of an instrument to a sample of four hospital institutions in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, were summarized and validated. In addition, Pareto analysis was used to identify the main qualitative deficiencies, based on the application of another instrument in the selected institutions.
Results: Deficiencies were identified from the technological, accounting, structural and human talent dimensions. For the main deficiencies, alternative solutions were proposed to mitigate their effects on medical services.
Conclusions: the main problems were concentrated in the technological and human talent dimensions.
