ABSTRACT

Antiphospholipid syndrome is a systemic heterogeneous disorder characterized by venous and arterial thrombosis, obstetric complications and persistently elevated antiphospholipid antibodies. This literature review was mainly conducted in Annual Reviews (https://www.annualreviews.org), Clinical Key (https://www.elsevier.com), US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health in PMC (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc) and Scientific Electronic Library Open, SciELO (www.scielo.es). The descriptor antiphospholipid syndrome in English and Spanish was used. Primary, secondary, and catastrophic antiphospholipid syndromes were described. Within the primary, emphasis was placed on the treatment of obstetrics, with the aim of preventing the thrombotic and obstetric complications of the disease and the use of, mainly, oral anticoagulation.
