ABSTRACT

Short bowel syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by an anatomical or functional loss of the small intestine. It appears mainly after extensive intestinal resections due to mesenteric ischemia. A 60-year-old female patient, who had a history of chronic gastritis and pulmonary fibrosis, is admitted to Hospital General Docente Mártires de Mayarí, Holguín, Cuba, with vomiting plus weight loss, anorexia and asthenia. Diminished adipose panicle, positive skin fold and dryness of the oral mucosa are detected by physical examination. An abdominal echography reveals a significant gastric dilation; so, an upper digestive endoscopy is performed with diagnosis of gastroparesis. A surgical procedure for gastrojejunumostomy is done, and a congenital short bowel syndrome is found.
