Video fluoroscopic alterations in the mechanics of swallowing in patients with cerebral palsy

ABSTRACT

Cerebral palsy (CP) is considered the main cause of childhood disability, with a series of concomitant disorders that if left untreated will limit the rehabilitation process. The clinical implications of swallowing disorders become relevant due to their increased premature mortality in patients with CP and dysphagia. Material and methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted at CRIT Aguascalientes, including patients diagnosed with CP level of gross motor function V (GMFCS), with videofluoroscopy study of the mechanics of swallowing. Results: 37 cases were analyzed, 67% with alteration in the 3 phases of swallowing, being the pharyngoesophageal phase the one with the greatest alteration. 80.1% with alteration in the oral phase where 73.3% presented contrast material output secondary to a deficient oral closure; 91.9% with alteration in the pharyngeal phase being the hypopharyngeal stasis the most frequent; 86.5% with alteration in the esophageal phase with alterations in the motility in the middle and lower third of the esophagus. Conclusions: Patients with cerebral palsy GMFCS V have alterations in various phases of swallowing, predominantly pharyngoesophageal alterations, which must be treated in a timely manner.
