Nurses´experiences related to the free exercise of their profession, using complementary therapies

ABSTRACT

Introduction. nowadays, nurses with postgraduate degrees who have studied complementary therapies begin practicing their profession in their own offices with several years’ experience in clinical functions and complementary theories. This allows for successful results in users with common illnesses, as well as synergistic actions when combined with conventional pharmacological therapies and surgeries. Methodology. cualitative and descriptive study with a phenomenological focus. The subjects were four resident nurses in Mexico City and the State of Hidalgo who used complementary therapies in their private practices; each had more than three years’ work experience. Information was obtained through in-depth interviews. Goal. to investigate the experiences of nurses who use complementary therapies, in the context of the free exercise of the profession. Findings. findings fit into three categories with their respective subcategories: 1. intention to heal through complementary therapies; 2. perception of the free exercise of nursing; 3. beginnings for the opening of the practice. Conclusion. as they follow through with the free exercise of their profession, nursing professionals take on leadership roles which require training and preparation to make decisions; this autonomy involves critical thinking based on received knowledge. Through research and practice, they can effect change in the care of patients, families, and the community through the use of complementary therapies.
