ABSTRACT

Introduction. The sterilization service plays a fundamental role in the hospital, being a support service for services that are key to patient care, mainly surgical services, and also contributes to minimizing the risk of nosocomial infections and the costs of not quality. The purpose of this work was to characterize the aptitudes and practices on the monitoring in the process of steam under pressure in operators of the central sterilization of a health center. Methods. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the Sterilization Center of a health center in Havana in the period between January-July of the year 2019, where a survey was applied to 25 workers of the plant with different functions within the same. Variables were studied: age, sex, years of stay in the center, concept of chemical and biological controls, type of controls used in monitoring, types of chemical controls, procedures in the placement of chemical and biological controls, and whether received training or not. Results. Female sex and age with more than 30 years stood out. The rating of good was obtained in most of the variables studied. Conclusions: It was evident that although the highest number of qualifications was good, there are difficulties that must be addressed.
