ABSTRACT

Antecedents: Simple renal cysts are common in adults, with a 20% frequency at the age of 40 and 33% at the age of 60. In most patients, their finding is incidental. They are associated with pain at the flank, hypertension, hematuria, mass effect, infection or obstruction of the pyelo-calyceal system.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Objective: We present our experience with five patients, using the laparoscopic approach for the resection of a simple renal cyst.
Case descriptions: We operated five patients in a period of 6 months. One man and five women, aged from 15 to 55 years, subjected to a resection of the renal cyst through laparoscopy. Two of the patients had antecedents of pyelonephritis; all patients presented pain at the site of the cyst. The size of the cysts varied from 4 to 6 cm in diameter; one of the patients had antecedents of puncture and sclerotherapy of the cyst performed 10 years before. Approach was retroperitoneal in all cases, with complete resection of the renal cyst and biopsy of the roof of the cyst. Surgical time ranged from 40 to 60 min, hospital stay was of 3 to 4 days. Symptoms disappeared in all five patients.
Conclusion: In our experience, surgical resolution of simple renal cysts through laparoscopy was successful.
