Pneumocystis carinii, pneumonia for P. carinii, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), diseases associated to AIDS.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in children with HIV-AIDS has motivated the clinical d laboratory investigation about this microorganism and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of it’s associated disease. The case of a preeschool child with this illness it is presented; the clinical-pathological investigation done for the identification the P. Carinii; as well the histopathological particularities of the damage tissues and the ultrastructural issues of this microorganism. The available laboratory procedures for their diagnosis, related to the development of fluorescent monoclonal antibodies and the polymerase chain reaction, are revised. Mention is also done to the chemotherapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) and other therapeutic alternatives and in regard to measures of prevention.
