ABSTRACT

The goal of this study is to describe the preparation of the discharge of the patient with spinal chord injury through the perception of the nursing team. We assume that the discharge preparation begins at the moment of the patient’s admission to the hospital and continues through the whole inpatient care phase, with the family and/or caretaker being an integral part of the process. The main direction of our work is to understand the discharge process in this context, and to propose that it should be organized according to the Nursing Case Management model, which is a care delivery model that appoints a specific professional or health team for the total patient care (Mendes, 1998). Through a qualitative perspective, the study has been developed in the Trauma and Emergency Unit, Surgical Clinic and Orthopedics Department at a terciary Hospital. We have utilized a semi-structured interview type as the technique to collect data. Five nurses who care for spinal chord injury patientshave taken part of the study. The data were gathered during the month of May, 2000, and analyzed using the method of content and theme analysis. We have identified as a (theme unit?) the characterization of the care ot the patient with spinal chord injury during the inpatient period.
