ABSTRACT

Background: Anemia in chronic disease is the second type of anemia with the highest prevalence worldwide and the first type in hospitalized patients.
Methodology: It was made a review based on the methodology Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) in databases EBSCO, APAsycnet, ERIC, Redalyc, Scielo, Science Direct, PubMed, BVS Medline and SCOPUS. Key words obtained from DeCS (Health Sciences Descriptors) and MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) included were: anemia, chronic disease and inflammation, with the boolean operators OR and AND, from 2015 to 2020.
Results: A total of 2161 articles were obtained, of which the first reduction was made to 506 studies under the title and abstract elements, later the second reduction in the eligibility stage to 127 articles and finally in the last stage 19 articles were included. The treatments found in these studies were: iron supplement, erythropoietin, prolylhydroxylase inhibitors (PHI), transfusion, hepcidin inhibitors, antiactivin agents and pentoxifylline.
Conclusions: According to the studies analyzed, the most effective treatment is the inhibition of hepcidin production and activity, as well as therapy with transferrin conjugates.
