ABSTRACT

Introduction: Dengue a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection is endemic in all continents, except in Europe.
Objective: To report a case of dengue hemorrhagic fever associated to renal dysfunction in the Southeast of Mexico.
Design: Case report.
Setting: ICU of a general hospital of Villahermosa, Tabasco; Mexico.
Patient: A 15-yrs-old child with fever, abdominal pain and thrombocytopenia was admitted to hospital. At admission blood pressure was 80/40 mmHg, and oliguria, platelets of 9,000/mm3, serum urea y creatinine 98 and 4.9 mg/dL, respectively were observed. Resucitation with fluids was initiated and thereafter creatinine clearance was 58 mL/min and serologic tests confirmed dengue fever. At 5th ICU stay urinary output was recovered, the level of platelets was 71,000/mm3, serum creatinine decreased to 0.9 mg/dL and he was discharge of the ICU.
Conclusion: Dengue hemorrhagic fever may be associated with kidney dysfunction.

Key words: Dengue hemorrhagic, dengue shock syndrome, kidney dysfunction.
