Cardiac surgery has greatly improved over the last decades. More severely ill patients are now undergoing surgery, spending the first post-perative days in the Intensive Care Unit. In order to standardize and excel in prognosis and level of care, a risk stratification tool is needed. We applied the EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) to 197 consecutive coronary artery by-pass grafting patients (166 men and 31 women, mean age 60.5 ± 9.7 years) in a private hospital in northeastern Mexico. Mortality ratio by risk stratification group was 0/70, 2/78 and 8/49 for low, moderate and high risk patients respectively. Data did not differ from previously informed American and European series. We conclude that EuroSCORE could be useful in this population and that differences observed between this series and others in the medical literature were insignificant.
