ABSTRACT

According to section V of the «1999 workshop» in periodontics, necrotizing periodontal disease it is divided in, ulceronecrotic gingivitis and ulceronecrotic periodontitis. In both conditions, immunosuppression is associated with local and systemic predisposing factors such as opportunistic bacteria and stress, where they play an important role in the development of the disease. Although, necrotizing periodontal disease is an uncommon condition that occurs more frequently in the population every day. The ulceronecrotic gingivitis is characterized by ulceration and inflammation of the interdental gingival tissue, spontaneous bleeding, necrosis, acute pain and generalized malaise, while ulceronecrotic periodontitis it presents with the same signs and symptoms unlike the loss of insertion. The aim of the present work is to analyze the characteristics of the necrotizing periodontal disease by means of two cases, as well as to discuss the importance of the diagnosis to establish a correct treatment plan for both entities.

Key words: Necrotizing periodontal disease, ulceronecrotic gingivitis, ulceronecrotic periodontitis.
