ABSTRACT

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common infectious complication in all intensive care units worldwide, causing a significant increase in social and economic costs. The application of resources for the prevention of VAP is an unfelt need; therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the costs of this type of infections. The objective of this study is to know the cost of VAP in a pediatric intensive care unit. We analyzed 92 pneumonia events by calculating the fixed and variable direct costs of care; the cost per event was $ 6,174.89, and the total cost was $ 670,608.03. The total cost of pneumonias represents 4.4% of the institute’s total resources, as reported by the 2015 Quality, Work and Safety Program. It is necessary to disclose the savings that would mean the reduction of these events according to the expenditure made in the care of VAP in the institution, in order to allocate resources to strategies to prevent this problem.
