ABSTRACTBackground: Liaison psychiatry is the area responsible for the assessment of psychiatric disorders related to diseases and physical disabilities of medical and surgical patients. Liaison psychiatry develops mainly in the context of somatic disease, where it is important patient information about their family, environmental influences and stressors that may influence the course, treatment and recovery of their underlying disease.
Material and methods: In the Hospital Central Militar were treated in the Psychiatry of liaison and consultation service for 3 months a total of 151 patients, of whom were obtained and analyzed socio demographic data, the reason of the evaluation and if the patients were communicated about being evaluated by a psychiatrist prior the interview, as well as diagnosis.
Results: We demonstrated that the population of older adults corresponded the highest percentage with 21.2% (32 patients); with regard to the gender, it was found a higher number of women; according to diagnosis, the most common corresponded to affective disorders (depression) [24.5 %, (37 patients)]. An interesting finding was that 50.33% (76 patients) were not communicated about the psychiatric evaluation before it occurred. Finally, poor communication problems were detected between staff doctor and patients, affecting the integral medical care of them.
Discussion: It is necessary to review the programs and courses of psychiatry, besides disseminating academic events related to internal and specialist physicians to participate more actively. Rotation of students, medical interns and resident doctors of Hospital Central Militarl for psychiatric wards should also be encouraged, in order to improve clinical practice and the management of patients on staff training, for the comprehensive treatment of the patient which is an important part of mental health, it implies not only the hospital setting, but any first contact medical care, including tertiary institutions, where the various medical specialties.
