ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify the conditions of Periodontal Disease (PD) and Alveolar Bone Loss (ABL) in patients from Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias (INER) with tobacco addiction, associated with time and the amount of cigarettes consumed daily. Design: Prospective, transversal, observational and descriptive. Study not probabilistic consecutive sampling. Materials: For the purpose of this study, a Michigan O periodontal and Weissman collimator AGFA X rays were used. Method: Clinical and radiographic evaluation was performed measuring periodontal pocket using the Periodontal Screening Recording examination and ten radiographs for each patients. The measuring distance from the cement-enamel junction to the marginal bone in the proximal areas. Results: 100 patients were evaluated, the frequency of PD was 57% and the ABL was 73%. The time of addiction to tobacco and the number of cigarettes consumed daily showed an association with PD (RM 1.8, IC 95% 1.2-2.6, p = .002) and with the number of cigarettes consumed daily showed an association with ABL (RM 3.7, IC 95% 1.4-9, p = .000). Conclusions: The number of cigarettes consumed per day, together with the time of addiction to tobacco increase the probability to presents PD and ABL.

Key words: Periodontal disease, alveolar bone lost, tobacco.
