ABSTRACT

Background: Successful fertilization in assisted reproductive technology depends mainly on the quality of sperm plasma membrane. In patients who consult for infertility has been found more abnormalities in the plasma membrane translocation of phosphatidylserine as, evidence of early apoptotic events. For this population, “healthy” may be apt to fertilize the female gamete requires techniques to select the free sperm apoptotic damage, such as the “magnetic-activated cell sorting” (MACS).
Objective: To compare sperm selection by swim-up only or in combination with MACS-technique in infertile patients ANMB whose semen sample was used for assisted reproduction technique of high complexity (intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI), with the rate of fertilization and embryonic development.
Material and methods: pilot study of 11 couples in whom the semen sample was divided into two groups: (group A: selected by swimup), (group B selected by swim up and MACS). With the population obtained seminal ICSI was performed for each group was evaluated fertilization rate, embryo development and fragmentation.
Results: The fertilization rate was 83.8 vs 93.9% for groups A and B, respectively, for what concerns the number of blastomeres was 2.6 and 2.8 and in the percentage of fragmentation on day three after fertilization of 7.19 vs. 7.88% for groups A and B, respectively, without reaching statistical significance.
Conclusions: It is now clear that sperm selection by MACS decreases the sperm population with early apoptotic damage, however, it is necessary to conduct a clinical trial to determine significant differences in fertilization rate, embryo development, implantation rate and rate of pregnancy.
